The president of the Saskatchewan Union of Nurses says some of her members are on the verge of burnout with some deciding nursing is no longer a career worth pursuing with positions being left unfulfilled.
Tracy Zambory says there are over 90 openings for nurses right now in intensive care units across the province which, she says, is much higher than usual.
She says, nurses are just getting overwhelmed. Zambory says not only are they dealing with the pandemic, she says they are dealing with transformational change coming. They’re work is changing rapidly and they are finding it difficult to give quality care.
Zambory says part of the frustration comes from people who end up coming to hospital because they have not been vaccinated. She says some of these people are even attacking registered nurses on social media or personally.
She says nurses just feel there is a lack of respect for the profession and what it means to provide healthcare in the province.
