A scammer called a woman in Lloydminster and told her that her SIN number had been compromised, so she needed to take out all of her money, convert it to Bitcoin and send the wallet to the RCMP. Police say the person contacted the woman on Wednesday using a spoofed number that made it look like it was coming from the Lloydminster RCMP Detachment.
The victim realized it was a scam in time to cancel the transaction and called the police. The RCMP reminds the public that they will never ask you for money or tell you to pay for anything using Bitcoin or other crypto currency or iTues cards or other gift cards. Police will never tell you to pay the money or be arrested for tax fraud and they will never tell you to send money overseas or to another unrelated party.
