Add the Canada West Conference to the list of sports organizations and/or leagues jumping on the fully vaccinated in order to participate bandwagon.
Canada West announced late Friday afternoon that their Board of Directors voted unanimously in favour of having all University athletes be vaccinated in order to participate. That edict includes all coaches, managers, medical staff plus strength and conditioning coaches. Anyone who is unvaccinated right now has until next Thursday to receive their first dose with all Canada West Conference personnel to receive their second shot by October 17. Following is the news release from the Canada West Conference…
Canada West adopts proof of COVID-19 vaccination policy
Board approves policy for 2021-22 season
The conference’s Board of Directors voted unanimously to adopt the policy, which will go into effect immediately.
The policy will require all Canada West participants to have received a first dose of an approved Health Canada or World Health Organization (WHO) COVID-19 vaccine by September 9, 2021. A second dose must be received no later than October 17, 2021, in order to continue participation in university sport activity between Canada West member institutions.
Canada West participants include all student-athletes, coaches, managers, medical staff, strength and conditioning coaches, all event staff and officials, in attendance at competitions.
Despite this policy, Canada West will respect any accommodation measures implemented by an individual institution to address a participant’s inability to be vaccinated for a reason protected by the applicable provincial human rights legislation. The Canada West policy does not supersede provincial or institutional policies that may be in place.
