The Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations wants the federal government and the RCMP to take action in what they call a “rash of avoidable and preventable tragedies experienced by First Nations in the recent months”.
The FSIN claims that James Smith Cree Nation community members notified the RCMP about risks posed by the suspect in the weekend shooting on the First Nation as well as about drug dealers in the community months ago and say the RCMP didn’t investigate.
The FSIN also suggests the RCMP won’t enforce Band Council Resolutions to banish drug dealers from their communities and some of the communities they name include Beardy’s, Ochapowace, Flying Dust and George Gordon First Nations.
The Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations believes the current policing model doesn’t deliver any long term strategic plans that can be measured, that it is not community policing but instead policing which involves cleaning up the aftermath of violent events.
