Black Lake RCMP say a man, woman and child are safe after spending a night in the forest. Late afternoon on September 3rd, a man woman and four-year-old child headed out on a Utility Terrain Vehicle on the area trails.
Police were told the woman called a family member at 8 in the evening, saying the UTV had become stuck in the muskeg, and then the line disconnected. Concerned family and friends who are familiar with the area began the search and then called the Black Lake detachment for help later that night. The search continued until it was too dark and dangerous to continue, then resumed at daybreak.
The next morning, an RCMP officer and a Ministry of Environment conservation officer head out out on an ATV, and the trio was found just after 10 a.m. They were safe, uninjured and needed no medical attention after having made a fire and sheltering in the UTV overnight.
Cst. Sean Carlson says, “It was very lucky that they were able to find a cell signal and let family know they were stuck. That’s not always the case in the far north. If anyone is heading out on off-road vehicles, or hunting or trapping in remote areas, they can always contact the detachment and provide travel plans and planned return time, just in case.”
