“With the discovery of hundreds of unmarked graves at residential school sites in Saskatchewan, we need to come together and ensure that we are doing everything we can to stand with First Nations and Metis communities and address the damaging legacy of residential schools in our province.” That from the Official Opposition’s Critic for First Nations and Metis Relations and Truth and Reconciliation, Betty Nippi-Albright.
The NDP would like the provincial government to adopt the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on September 30th as a day off for provincially regulated workplaces, instead of just federally regulated workplaces. Nippi-Albright notes the NDP has called for the legislature to be reconvened to address COVID-19, which would also be an opportune time to make any necessary amendments to The Saskatchewan Employment Act.
September 30th is also Orange Shirt Day to commemorate the residential school experience and commit to the ongoing process of reconciliation.
