Saskatchewan’s NDP is calling on the provincial government to expand protections for all workers including those who are contract workers and gig workers. Labour Critic, Carla Beck says this comes following consultations with workers and advocates as the province undergoes a regular review of Saskatchewan’s occupational health and safety standards. Beck says the official opposition has launched a petition that will be presented once the legislature resumes next month. Included in the petition is an expansion of OH&S to include all workers, comprehensive protections for interpersonal violence and sexual harassment and provisions to support workers living with mental illness. Beck says the pandemic has exposed the challenges working people are up against and the province needs OH&S provisions that recognize both shifting employee-employer relationships and the burdens of work in the 21st century.
