The Saskatchewan Health Authority and the University of Saskatchewan have announced the expansion of the province’s residency training program. The program will expand to the southeastern part of the province and will provide training opportunities for doctors in 12 communities including Humboldt, Estevan, Yorkton and Weyburn. Like the northwest Saskatchewan site approach, many communities will operate as training sites to create a fuller learning experience, in addition to enhancing patients care in the area. Remote Health Minister, Everett Hindley says the expansion will provide valuable experience for medical graduates along with helping to improve access to care for residents in smaller communities. In Saskatchewan, there are currently 48 family medicine residency spots available. The expansion will allow for four more family medicine residents to pursue training.
