Electric vehicles in Saskatchewan will now be charged an annual fee of $150. SGI calls it a road-use fee, which the Crown Corporation will collect on behalf of the provincial government for any registrations as of today (Fri). The fee is due at the time of registration or renewal.
SGI says in a news release the fee will be used to help maintain Saskatchewan’s roads and highways. The fee will contribute to highway maintenance in the same way the provincial fuel tax does. For those who don’t use their electric vehicle all year round, and only register for part of the year, the fee will be prorated based on the length of the term. Hybrid vehicles consume traditional fuels, and therefore contribute to the fuel tax so they won’t be part of this new fee.
As of September 22nd, there were 611 electric vehicles registered in Saskatchewan.
