It wasn’t the prettiest football game ever played in Calgary Saturday night when the Stampeders defeated the Roughriders 23-17. Cody Fajardo and the Riders offence had a better second half driving the ball by scoring a touchdown on the ground with William Powell and putting up 11 points compared to the 6 scored in the first half from two Brett Lauther field goals. Fajardo who finished the game with 269 yards though the air and 25 completions on 44 pass attempts says the second half is when things started to click for the green and white. “We fought, one thing the league should know about this team is we’re gonna fight till final whistle. It’s unfortunate it didn’t go our way and I thought we got in a good groove there in the second half moving the ball and completed some balls down field but offensively speaking we were just not in it today.” The Riders attempted an onside kick within the last two minutes of play, which was successful, although the play was brought back on a penalty and replayed. This time another successful onside kick recovered by kicker Brett Lauther, although the offence wasn’t able to capitalize in the closing moments. Calgary quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell left the game late in the 4th quarter with what is described as a shoulder issue. Mitchell went 16 for 25 with 184 yards and two touchdown passes including one to Shawn Bane who made his CFL debut Saturday night. Next up for the Riders is a rematch with the Calgary Stampeders, except this time it’s in Regina at Mosaic Stadium. Kickoff on Saturday is at 5 o’clock.
