Saskatchewan’s first of four large-scale solar facilities is now generating power. SaskPower says the Highfield Solar Facility near Swift Current is a 10 megawatt facility which can generate enough electricity for about 2,500 homes.
Saturn Power, which is based out of Ontario, built the facility and will own and operate it and sell the power to SaskPower. The Ontario company chose Saskatchewan’s miEnergy as its General Contractor on the project.
Minister responsible for SaskPower, Don Morgan, says, “SaskPower is set to exceed its emissions reduction targets, and renewables such as solar are an important part of a balanced approach that will allow our province to achieve net-zero emissions from power production by 2050.” The other three solar power facilities are to be added to the province’s grid over the next two years.
