The President of USask’s chapter of a non-profit financial literacy organization says many high school graduates aren’t prepared to navigate their personal finances, and that’s where PennyDrops comes in. Areeba Bilal says PennyDrops began in 2015 and has grown across the country, serving over 9,000 university and high school students.
The USask chapter has been around for about two years, with 700 students educated on things like banking, how to manage money, budgeting, mindful spending, taxes and student loans. Originally, PennyDrops mentors would go to high schools in Saskatoon to do these workshops, but since the pandemic, the workshops are now available online. Bilal says that has meant being more accessible to schools across the province and they have now run workshops in nine cities and towns.
