Opposition Critic for Economy Alena Young says that the province should be looking into following Ontario lead and increase the minimum wage. Young says, “We’ve been pretty consistent in our calls for a $15/hr minimum wage but as we all know prices are going up, inflation is increasing. I know I filled up my car, it cost about 85 bucks when it used to cost around 60. So things are getting more expensive for people in this province.”
Labour Relations Minister Don Morgan says minimum wage is something they look at each year and they will be monitoring the changes in other jurisdictions before making any other changes.
He says New Brunswick is lower than Saskatchewan. Morgan says the formula used in this province is adjusted annually and it is midway between the consumer price increase and the average hourly wage.
Ontario recently announced that they will be raising theirs’s to 15 dollars in the new year.
