There are three new flags hanging above the Saskatoon Public School Division’s office joining the Canadian and provincial flags.
They are the Metis Nation, Treaty Six and Whitecap Dakota First Nation flags.
Vice-Chair of the Public School Board, Kathleen Brannen, says the flag raising is to show the commitment to First Nations and Metis children through a visible reminder in the community.
“As a school division, we have a duty to transform the relationship that Indigenous families have with schools. It is also incumbent on us to teach every student about Canada’s history of Colonialism and its lasting impact of residential schools.”
Tribal Chief of the Saskatoon Tribal Council, Mark Arcand, says these flags flying together shows a partnership.
He believes we have to unite to make a difference in education, for all people to have success.
Meantime, the Saskatchewan government announced Tuesday Saskatchewan that it is launching a first-of-its-kind-in-Canada signage project.
The provincial government is supporting the Office of the Treaty Commissioner’s application for official Treaty boundary signage.
The signs will mark the two largest Treaty territories in Saskatchewan, Treaty 4 and Treaty 6.
Installation of the first sign is planned for this winter or the spring of 2022.
