Premier Scott Moe received over 80 per cent of the Saskatchewan Party’s support Saturday during a members vote. The SaskParty doesn’t unveil the exact number if the support is greater than 80 per cent. This was Moe’s second party review since taking over as premier in 2018.
Prior to facing a leadership review during the party’s convention at TCU Place Saturday, Moe took to the stage and took aim at Canada’s prime minister and his commitment to put a hard cap on greenhouse gas emissions.
Moe said Justin Trudeau’s decision to place a cap on emissions is “An outright attack on the energy industry in Saskatchewan.” He added that he’s not sure what that will exactly mean for Saskatchewan. “We’re sorting through that, but what I fear is that our prime minister is setting the stage ultimately to drive out even more investment at a time when our energy industry is just starting to recover with the prices that we see in the process.”
Moe presented to his fellow SaskParty members for about 45 minutes. During that time he briefly touched on the COVID-19 pandemic.
Saskatchewan’s premier said in the early days of the pandemic, the government only had one tool to control the spread of the virus and that was lockdowns, but now Moe says vaccines are widely available. “It doesn’t make sense for us to restrict everyone’s’ activities, everyone’s personal freedoms when we have those vaccines in place.”
Moe also touched on his party’s success in the 2020 provincial election and pondered what the province would look like under an NDP government. “The NDP has openly said that they would take us back to sweeping lockdowns in communities across Saskatchewan. They would close business in communities across Saskatchewan, including yours.”
The premier also keyed in on investments made in the province’s canola, potash and tech industries.
