The Prince Albert Police Service says it is acknowledging the devastating loss to families and the stress and anxiety for their staff after three in custody deaths in recent weeks.
In a statement, P.A. Police says that each incident has its own set of individual facts and that the police service supports a thorough investigation by outside, independent police agencies with oversight from independent observers.
Prince Albert Police also points out that the investigative process involving an in-custody death can be lengthy taking months or even years.
In the interim, the statement says their police service is reviewing recommendations from previous coroner’s inquests into in-custody death investigations.
The Prince Albert Police Service does have a partnership with Parkland Ambulance and the Saskatchewan Health Authority for on-site medical care and supervision in the cell block seven days a week between 7:30 p.m. and 7:30 a.m.
Meanwhile, Broadview RCMP says Moose Jaw Police Service will conduct an independent external investigation into the circumstances surrounding the in-custody death of woman.
On Tuesday night around 9 p.m., RCMP responded to a report of a distraught person in the town of Kennedy. A 36 year old woman was taken into police care under the Mental Health Act. Shortly after, RCMP say she went into medical distress.
EMS was already at the scene and took her to hospital. She was declared deceased at approximately 2:30 a.m. Wednesday. No name is being released at this time.
The Saskatchewan Coroner’s Service is also investigating.
