Climate change was a major focus for a meeting of Federal, Provincial, and Territorial Ministers in Guelph, Ontario this week.
President of Agricultural Producers Association of Saskatchewan says climate change is high on the agenda now for their organizations, the public and across the world.
Todd Lewis attended the meeting representing APAS as well as the Canadian Federation of Agriculture.
He says communication between levels of government and producers need to continue.
“I think we just need to have more collaboration and a conversation with both governments and farmers and producers to talk about really there’s a lot of opportunity here with climate change and try to mitigate those problems arising from climate change. I think we need to talk more to governments and have them understand the good work that we have done in agriculture and the good work we are going to do in the future.”
Other topics discussed during the meeting include science, research and innovation, market development and trade, building sector capacity and growth, as well as resiliency and public trust.
A general consensus was reached at the meeting that Ag departments and industry must continue to strengthen their partnerships, while further engagement between those groups and their Agriculture and Environment Ministries must take place.
