Workers are going in with chainsaws at Little Red River Park in Prince Albert, near the Pine Grove Correctional Centre, to thin the pine and spruce trees as a form of wildfire preparedness.
The Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency expects the FireSmart/fuel mitigation efforts that started this fall should be complete by December 15th.
The initiative is conducted in partnership with the City of Prince Albert, SPSA and through funding from the Disaster Mitigation Adaptation Fund.
The City of Prince Albert says thinning projects have shown to be effective in reducing the intensity of wildfire and preventing tree crown to crown spread. The result would be a clean, parklike area that is still aesthetically pleasing but will not carry wildfire well.
