The Saskatchewan Construction Association is pleased to see legislation that will mean contractors getting paid when they are supposed to be paid is coming to fruition.
The official start date for prompt payment legislation for the construction industry is March 1st.
CEO, Mark Cooper, says it’s designed to stop the practice of making delayed payments to contractors.
Contracts signed on or after March 1st, have the right to expect payment within 28 days of filing a proper invoice.
It means business owners will no longer have to worry about their ability to bid on the next job, carry inventory, or train their employees because they haven’t been paid for the work they have already completed.
Cooper explains that systemic late payment in the construction industry stems from the complexity of the projects, the long line of consultants, contractors, and suppliers waiting to be paid, and the notion that contractors can’t walk off a project for which they haven’t been paid.
He says these are not acceptable excuses to avoid paying for work completed on time and to specification.
