SGI says in 2020 Saskatchewan drivers 19 and younger were 6.4 per cent of the province’s drivers, but were involved in in 11 per cent of all collisions, with 611 injuries and 15 deaths. That’s why the Crown Corporation is teaming up with youth leadership to talk about traffic safety.
SGI says in a news release it is distributing teen driver resources to local high schools and youth groups, which include a USB which has information on running peer-to-peer traffic safety initiatives within their schools, such as applying for community grants, hosting traffic-related events and starting a conversation about safe driving.
Staying focused on the road, speeding and impairment are some of the critical areas of focus included in the information package. SGI’s statistics indicate distracted and inattentive teen drivers cause an average of 138 injuries per year. As well, speeding contributed to 24 per cent of all Saskatchewan teen driver fatalities between 2016 and 2020, and teens between 15 and 19 are twice as likely to be injured due to impaired driving.
