A Saskatchewan family is looking for answers as to why the Ministry of Health will not cover their expenses for treatment that took place out of country.
Five year old Conner Finn had to seek treatment in Minnesota for a rare neurological condition called Adrenoleukodystrophy.
The family was asking the Ministry of Health to cover the costs. The SHA advised the Finn Family to seek treatment at the ALD Centre of Excellence in Minnesota.
Despite recommendations from Finn’s metabolic physician and the Health Services Review Committee, the Ministry of Health has refused to cover the cost of Conner’s treatment.
Conner’s mother Kirsten says that it has forced family into a difficult financial decision. She said they could have either waited and possibly fall out of the window for transplant, and watch their son deteriorate and die, or liquidate their retirement savings to pay for his treatment, which is what they ended up doing.
Health Minister Paul Merriman said that they were following recommendations from the ombudsman report and is willing to discuss the matter further with the Finn family.
The provincial opposition is calling for the immediate reimbursement of the Finn family for the total cost of Conner’s treatment. (CKRM)
