Today is Louis Riel Day
The Prime Minister described the Metis leader as an impassioned activist who fought for equality and says Louis Riel’s vision will continue to inspire Canadians walking the shared path of reconciliation.
Saskatchewan Polytechnic raised the Metis Flag for Louis Riel day at its campuses in Saskatoon, Regina, Prince Albert and Moose Jaw.
Riel led two popular Métis governments, was a central figure in Manitoba’s entry into Confederation, and led the Northwest Rebellion which in turn eventually led to Louis Riel’s execution. He was executed by hanging in Regina on this day in 1885.
In Saskatoon there are several things planned including a gathering at the statue of Gabriel Dumont in Friendship Park near the Broadway Bridge. Entertainment and traditional Métis lunch to follow at St. George’s Hall.
There is a virtual Riel Day Celebration this evening via Zoom. Register here.
And a Conversation on Louis Riel takes place, presented by the Gabriel Dumont Institute, Parks Canada, and Friends of Batoche. You can access the recording here.
