Starting next year, Saskatoon Motorists will have to slow down in school zones for longer periods of the day, and instead of just during months while school is in, the 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. school zone will be in effect seven days a week all year long. Right now it is from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. September through June. New ‘School Areas’ are also being implemented for high schools instead of schools zones.
Originally, city administration was seeking a 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. time for school zones.
Councillor Darren Hill said that time would have been an overreach. “We’re trying to solve a solution which is a problem that hasn’t been identified as a problem. If there are children attending particular events like concerts and stuff, my understanding is they’re probably in the presence of their parents.”
‘School Areas’ near high schools means means signage will be in place letting motorists know that they’re near a school.
Administration will also continue to explore traffic calming measures in areas where seniors live.
