The future of the Extendicare facilities was discussed during Thursday’s Question Period at the Legislative assembly.
The Saskatchewan Health Authority assumed the responsibilities as administrators for the long term care services at the five Extendicare facilities in the province. Minister Responsible for Seniors Everett Hindley says the government is undergoing an evaluation process and he’s not sure how long that process will take.
Opposition Critic Matt Love said he would like to more clarity from the provincial government on which direction they plan to take with long term care services in the province. He says they are looking for a commitment from the Minister that for profit care is bad for seniors and has no place in the province. Love says it has presented a deadly set of circumstances for residents in Saskatchewan and across Canada.
Hindley says after the ombudsman report the government will likely not pursue another contract with Extendicare and he says it is fairly clear that the existing situation was not working particularly well in Saskatchewan. (CKRM)
