Period leads of 2-0 and 2-1 could not be turned into a victory Sunday for the Saskatoon Blades as the Edmonton Oil Kings scored four unanswered third period goals in a 5-2 triumph.
Playing their third game in three days on the road, the Bridge City Bunch were given six of seven power play chances in the game’s first 22 minutes, making good on two of them as Kyle Crnkovic and Trevor Wong staked the Blue and Gold to a lead, However, three straight man advantages eventually led to Edmonton breaking through for a power play goal of their own, giving them momentum going into the third period. The Blades, who went into the three-game weekend with five healthy defenceman, lost veteran Charlie Wright to an Upper Body injury in the second frame. The remaining four beleaguered blueliners couldn’t quite keep up in the third period as the Oil Kings won their ninth straight home game to improve to 16-4-3 for the season. Saskatoon, who were out-shot 41-21, dropped to 12-9-1. On the positive side, the Bridge City Bunch opened the scoring in a game for the first time since their 2-1 win in Brandon on November 12 and ended an oh-for-13 run on the power play. The Blue and Gold finish up their stretch of nine consecutive road games on Friday and Saturday in Winnipeg against the W-H-L-leading ICE.
