The N-D-P is once again attacking the government on a controversial bill aimed at overhauling security at the provincial legislature with the current team being replaced by one that would that would have government control. Justice critic Nicole Sarauer called out Government House Leader Jeremy Harrison during Question Period today saying his name is on this bill and why is he asking for this
He’s the one who’s name is on this dumpster fire of a bill, he’s the one who pushed for these changes and he’s the one pulling procedural stunts late into the night on Bill 70. Will he finally find the courage, finally find his feet and finally answer why this government won’t just scrap Bill 70?”
Corrections Minister Christine Tell says the N-D-P needs to know something, “Times have changed Mr. Speaker, the members on that side need to get with it.”
Third reading of the bill will happen in the spring of 2022. If it passes, many of the current security responsibilities handled by the sergeant-of-arms would fall into the jurisdiction of a security director appointed by the government.
Also in the legislature Wednesday, the opposition N-D-P once again called for an independent public inquiry into the government’s handling of COVID-19 and why certain things weren’t done. Ryan Meili says there are questions about the handling of the pandemic and the lives that were lost that the government needs to answer.
