Waskesiu RCMP say one man is dead after a stand-off involving a weapon on the Montreal Lake Cree Nation.
Police were called in shortly before 5:00 p.m. Tuesday to a report of a man in a home on the First Nation armed with a firearm. Officers were advised he had barricaded himself after using the firearm to chase another person out of the home.
Officers from the surrounding area deployed to the scene and at 10:15 p.m. last night, RCMP say the man exited the home while holding a firearm. Responding officers fired shots and he was injured. Despite life saving measures provided by RCMP and then EMS, the man was being transported to Victoria Hospital in Prince Albert and was declared deceased at 11 p.m.
Residents should expect an increased police presence at Montreal Lake First Nation.
The man has been identified and his family has been notified. Victim Services has been made available to them.
The Saskatchewan RCMP Commanding Officer, Assistant Commissioner Rhonda Blackmore, says “This is a tragic incident for everyone involved, including the family of the deceased, the community and our officers. We extend our condolences to the family of the deceased and the community of Montreal Lake Cree Nation”
When an incident results in death or serious injury, the RCMP Act requires that an investigation be conducted by an external agency. The Saskatchewan RCMP has requested the Saskatoon Police Service conduct the independent, external investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death. In accordance with the Saskatchewan Police Act an independent investigation observer will also be appointed.
