Everything from broadband internet, to oil and gas tax arrears and possible increased policing costs were discussed at a virtual meeting of the Western Canadian Municipal Associations.

There were representatives from both the Saskatchewan urban and rural municipality associations, along with their counterparts n British Columbia, Alberta and Manitoba.

The Saskatchewan Urban Municipalities Association says from the conversations around broadband, it was clear that reliable internet access is a top priority. It needs to be affordable and accessible to support those living and traveling in rural and remote areas.

The WCMA would like a quicker rollout of broadband projects across Canada to end what it calls digital poverty.

Another issue discussed was the uncertainty municipalities face regarding the cost of the RCMP unionizing its police force.

The associations recognize compensation needs to be fair and remain competitive, but there is concern about who will be responsible for the anticipated rising costs.
