Some people may choose to have a quiet evening at home for New Year’s Eve, but for those who plan to celebrate elsewhere, SGI and police across Saskatchewan are urging everyone to make a plan beforehand for a safe ride home.  SGI spokesperson Tyler McMurchy says there are multiple options which include taking a cab, a rideshare, or a designated driving service that brings you and your vehicle home. You can also use public transit for free through SGI’s Wing In The New Year. McMurchy adds you could also plan to stay the night where you are celebrating.

Police across the province have been enforcing impaired driving throughout the holiday season and that continues tonight (Thurs) and tomorrow. McMurchy says there are no hints as to where the checkstops will be, because people should just assume that if they are heading out for the evening, they will encounter a checkstop or an unmarked police vehicle.

Staff Sergeant Patrick Barbar of the Saskatoon Police Service says the cold doesn’t scare them, so they will be out with impaired driving stopchecks. Some drivers will be asked to do a breath test, which Barbar estimates generally takes less tan a minute. Police are also using new oral fluid devices for cannabis and cocaine testing.
