As of today (Saturday), there are new rules for those who want to use private land for recreational purposes, such as hunting or snowmobiling. Provincial trespassing legislation states you will need permission from the landowner before entering the property. It can be granted in several ways including verbal, text, email or on a posted sign.

Supporters say the legislation provides protection again property damage and the risk of spreading crop disease. Todd Lewis, President of the Agricultural Producers Association of Saskatchewan, says, “We live in a world where soil bourne diseases can be spread and we have all had the experience now in Saskatchewan agriculture over the last number of years with pests like Clubroot which can be spread by soil, so it’s an important step.”

Police and provincial enforcement officers will continue to be responsible for laying trespassing charges. Landowners should contact their local police service if they believe someone is trespassing on their property.
