Two years after Joseph “David” Caissie was found guilty of the first degree murder of Carol King outside of Herschel, his appeal will be heard today (Mon).

King was reported missing in August of 2011. Her car was found in a slough four days later, and then three weeks later her body was found in a wooded area near an abandoned yard, about six kilometres from the slough.

In 2016, the RCMP announced that Caissie had been arrested. It was reported there was a police undercover operation, called a Mr. Big sting, where officers pose as criminals to get information, and that evidence, which included a confession, was ruled admissible.

Caissie’s lawyer, Kevin Hill, said at the time he feels the facts of the case were inconsistent with information from the sting operation and should have been thrown out. He believes the confession given to undercover police was unreliable.

Caissie received an automatic life sentence without the chance of parole for 25 years. Caissie was also found guilty of offering an indignity to a body.
