Saskatchewan recorded 236 wildfires this year, that’s well below the five-year average of 444.
Crystal Fajt, the Provincial Wildland Fire Coordinator says having a lower number of fires doesn’t just keep the budget in check, it also allows them to send crews to other jurisdictions that need assistance.
“So we sent personnel equipment and aircraft to Alberta, we sent aircraft to Alaska, people equipment and aircraft to Ontario, we sent people to Manitoba and sent a wildfire investigator to Yukon.”
Fajt says they also assisted the Department of National Defense at the Cold Lake Air Weapons Range.
She adds, although there were quite a few storms with lightning this summer, many of those storms brought rain which helped reduce the number of fires this year.
This year, Saskatchewan recorded the lowest number of wildfires in more than 35 years with 236 to date.
