The U of S women’s hockey team had never swept Alberta in their Edmonton home rink…until this past weekend, and they have goaltender Camryn Drever to thank for the most part.
Drever was named the Canada West Conference women’s hockey player-of-the-week Tuesday after the third year netminder stopped 52 of 53 shots as Saskatchewan posted a pair of victories over the Golden Bears. Included was a run of seven consecutive shutout periods, including a pair of overtimes. On the men’s side, Alberta forward Noah Philp copped the weekly honours. Following is the news release from the Canada West Conference…..

Drever was flawless over two games this weekend after allowing one goal late in the first period Friday. She backstopped the Huskies to a hard-fought overtime win Friday, stopping 19 of 20 shots.
The third-year goaltender remained on lockdown Saturday, turning away all 33 shots she faced en route to a shutout and a weekend sweep of the Alberta Pandas.
Over the two games, Drever posted a remarkable .981 save percentage and a 0.50 goals against average. She went seven straight periods (including two overtimes) without allowing a single goal.
Saskatchewan (9-5-2) will be off for a week before they host the MacEwan Griffins (6-8) on Feb. 4 and 5 at Merlis Belsher Place. Puck drop is slated for 7 p.m. on the Friday and 5 p.m. on the Saturday.

Meanwhile, Philp led the Alberta Golden Bears past the Saskatchewan Huskies right to the top of the conference. The second-year forward notched three goals in his first two games of the season in a momentous sweep on the road over the weekend.
Philp opened the weekend scoring late in the first period Friday, breaking into the offensive zone before crashing the net for a rebound. He went on to score the game winner on a quick side-of-the-net play.
On Saturday, he exploded out of the defensive zone on a partial break, sniping one up and past the glove of Huskies’ goaltender Roddy Ross. That insurance goal came 25 seconds after a score by teammate Gary Haden, putting the match on ice.
The Golden Bears’ two wins this weekend shot them up the standings, where they now rank first in Canada West.
Alberta (11-2-1) will be back in action Friday and Saturday, when they host the University of Calgary Dinos (10-5-1) at Clare Drake Arena. Puck drop is slated for 7 p.m. both days.
