The first to announce they may consider a run for the provincial NDP leadership is NDP MLA Betty Nippi-Albright.

The MLA for Saskatoon-Centre tweeted this weekend saying “I’m curious, is Saskatchewan ready for a strong and vocal First Nations woman to lead,” She added “I know because racism is so firmly engrained and I do not come from a privileged background, it would be extremely difficult to run for leader. And ultimately, for premier.”

The Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations is backing a potential run by Nippi-Albright. A tweet from the FSIN says “Here is the opportunity for Saskatchewan to finally have a bold, charismatic and strong Treaty First Nations Indigenous voice leading in provincial politics.”

The NDP will soon begin their journey to find their next leader after current leader Ryan Meili announced last week that he’s stepping down once his successor is found.

NDP MLA Trent Wotherpoon tweeted on Saturday that he wouldn’t be running for leader as he doesn’t want to spend time away from his family.

Meili defeated Wotherspoon in the 2018 NDP leadership race.
