Canada’s Prime Minister says Russia needs to stand down and President Vladimir Putin needs to understand there are consequences to its invasion of Ukraine. On Monday, Putin signed a decree recognizing two regions of Ukraine as independent, and then ordered troops into those areas. Justin Trudeau announced late Thursday afternoon that Canada is sending more troops and imposing new sanctions in response to Russia’s deployment of forces, because the invasion is a violation of international law.

He says the economic sanctions from Canada and its allies will target those responsible, including Putin and a number of Russian parliamentarians, along with business leaders and companies, and pillars of the Russian financial system, including banks, Russia’s wealth fund, and the Ministry of Defence.

Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland says the quarrel is not with the Russian people. It is with the president and those around him who are making these choices. She adds that Canada and its allies are resolute in defending the Ukraine’s borders, as well as defending human rights, freedom and democracy.
