Saskatchewan’s Premier says on social media that Russia should be met with severe and immediate trade sanctions from nations across the world, including Canada, and that should include ending the import of Russian oil and natural gas. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has told reporters that Russia has carried out missile strikes and martial law has been declared. There are also reports that forces are trying to seize the Chernobyl nuclear plant.
Premier Scott Moe says, ” To those in Ukraine, and all Ukrainian-Canadians with loved ones in Ukraine, Saskatchewan stands with you. The attack by Russia is unprovoked, unwarranted and evil.”
Britain’s Prime Minister says a vast invasion is underway of the Ukraine by land, by air and by sea. Boris Johnson had a televised address this morning saying his nation cannot and will not look away. He says in concert with Britain’s allies they have agreed to a massive package of economic sanctions designed to hobble the Russian economy.
Prime Minister Johnson says, “We must also collectively cease the dependence on Russian oil and gas that for too long has given Putin his grip on western politics.”
World oil prices broke $100 a barrel, including West Texas Intermediate which is the North American benchmark, as Russia invaded Ukraine. Russia produces 10 per cent of the global oil supply.
