Police Chief Troy Cooper has provided a little more information into the officer-involved shooting of a 35 year-old man that closed a portion of Saskatoon’s 22nd Street to traffic on Wednesday.
Chief Cooper said in a news release “Our officers are often called to unpredictable, dynamic situations where they must rely on their extensive training and make split second judgements. It is fortunate that there was no physical injury to our staff members, and that it did not result in more serious injury to the suspect.”
The statement says officers responded to a report of a man armed with a handgun and machete on Avenue L South prior to the noon hour Wednesday. Before officers arrived, the suspect left a home and remained in the area and was travelling on foot, still in possession of a weapon. Cooper says during the brief altercation with police on Avenue U South, an officer discharged their firearm a number of times with the suspect being sent to hospital for treatment. The suspect has since been released from hospital and is in custody facing charges relating to the incident.
The Regina Police Service is investigating the officer-involved shooting. More details will be released by the RPS once it becomes available.
