Saskatoon Police responded to a call on the Train Bridge at 33rd and Spadina Crescent East after receiving multiple reports that a man was on the bridge and appeared ready to jump. Four officers located a man at 7:40 p.m. last night standing outside the railing who then reportedly climbed back over to the proper side of the railing and brandished an axe threatening to throw it at them.

He ignored verbal commands from the officer and threw the axe hitting an officer in the hip and then climbed back outside the bridge railing. The officers grabbed hold of him, pulled him to the walkway, he allegedly struggled, punched and spit on officers before being subdued and taken into custody.

A 41 year old man will be in provincial court this morning charged with assaulting the group of officers, carrying a weapon and breaching conditions of a peace bond. The officer who was hit with the axe was treated with stitches.
