It has been widely reported that Saskatoon has already seen a record number of homicides in 2019. But there are several other numbers of note over and above the 14 homicides so far this year. Assaults in the city are up overall when comparing last September to this September by 34.6 per cent. And for the northwest part of the city, assaults saw a 64.7 per cent increase. Armed robbery only saw a slight increase but robbery is up overall, year to date, by 39 per cent. Property Crime is down slightly overall but up when comparing September to September and under that category Break and enters are up significantly in all three police divisions. Break and enter residential is up 200 per cent for Central, 131 per cent for the East and 60.9 per cent in the Northwest. Theft of a motor vehicle is down in East and Northwest divisions but up 26.7 per cent in Central. Again that is comparing last September to this September.
How it breaks down in the city, looking at the 2018 annual report is 29 per cent of violent crime and 31 per cent of property crime is in the Northwest. For the Central Division that break down is 44 and 37 per cent. For East division 27 per cent of Saskatoon’s violent crime takes place east of the river as well as 32 per cent of property crime. What makes up violent crime? Primarily assaults at 58 per cent. In 2018, the Saskatoon Police Service notes trends of concern include robbery which increased by 28 per cent between 2017 and 2018 and in the same time frame break and enter to non-residential increased 23 per cent. The biggest drop in violent crime was armed robbery which saw a 28 per cent decrease year over year.
