The FSIN Executive, along with other First Nation leadership is not impressed with the response, or lack thereof, from the Prince Albert Police Service, the City of P.A., and the provincial government after alleging racism in the death of 13 month old Tanner Brass, who was left with his father, when his mom was taken into custody.

A First Nations group, including the Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations, the Prince Albert Grand Council and the Thunderchild First Nation says police assumed Kyla Frenchman was drunk and ignored her pleas for help for her and her baby, and police didn’t even go inside to check on the infant. It’s alleged that a call came in to police later from a man who said he had murdered his baby. The father, Kaij (cage) Brass, is charged with second degree murder.

FSIN Vice Chief Heather Bear says the officers should be fired immediately. Thunderchild First Nation Chief James Snakeskin says, “Systemic racism is allowing the police to investigate the police.” He wants First Nations involvement in these investigation, and in any investigation regarding the deaths of First Nations people, because he says there is no trust.
