Six months after a fatal accident where a nine year old girl on a scooter was fatally hit by a truck, a 28 year old woman has been charged. The accident happened around nine in the morning in the 600 block of 33rd Street West as Baeleigh Emily Maurice was heading to Mayfair Community School on September 9th of last year.

Following initial toxicology results and an opinion from Crown Prosecutors, Saskatoon Police investigators have charged the driver with impaired driving while exceeding the prescribed blood-drug concentration of THC causing death. She was taken into custody this morning (Fri), but her name has not been released.

A few days after the accident, the Saskatoon Police Service explained that traffic collision investigations are highly specialized and involve a variety of investigative techniques including reconstruction, witness interviews and forensic lab testing, and the utilization of science can mean a lengthy investigation. The incident remains under investigation.

In Early January, the City of Saskatoon’s Transportation Committee heard from the President of the Hudson Bay Park/Mayfair/Kelsey Woodlawn Community Association about pedestrian safety at crosswalks. Diane Bentley urged the committee to watch the heartbreaking video posted by Baeleigh’s mom on social media. Bentley was advocating for more warning for drivers that a crosswalk is coming up, like an X on the road, like you would see before a railway crossing, or a yellow sign posted in advance of the intersection. Administration reported that this suggestion would be part of an upcoming review on pedestrian crossings.
