Those who live on a local non-priority street in Saskatoon will be able to leave their gardening structures on boulevards throughout the winter.
This comes after the City had conversations with other municipalities and conducted a further review of the matter.
Angela Gardiner, the City’s general manger of utilities and environment says gardening structures on local non-priority streets don’t pose a significant risk to snow removal equipment as those streets aren’t graded during a typical winter, unless there is a higher amount of snow accumulation like what was seen in 2020/2021.
Gardiner adds structures on priority streets will still have to be removed by the October 15th deadline. Gardiner says guidelines will be updated to allow garden structures on non-priority local streets along with information on what consists of a local non-priority street.
Both Calgary and Edmonton have snow removal programs in place that don’t conflict with gardening structures on boulevards.
During an April 26th, 2021 City Council meeting, it was decided that Administration report back on options to mitigate concerns about snow removal with regards to permanent gardening structures, including feedback from Edmonton and Calgary.
