War in Ukraine’s western region is intensifying as Russia continues its invasion of the country. A strike on a military base that was previously used by NATO to train Ukraine’s military has taken place. It’s said 30 cruise missiles hit the base near the Poland border. Thirty-five fatalities have been reported according to the Associated Press with another 134 injured. It’s the closest attack so far to Poland, which is a NATO country. The port city of Mariupol is also continuing to get hit by Russian airstrikes and other artillery.
The attack on the military base comes after Russia threatened to target any foreign weapon shipments to help Ukrainian fighters. It’s reported the base that was attacked is less than 25 kilometres from the Polish border. The facility was known as the International Peacekeeping and Security Center. It was utilized by the United States and other NATO countries to train Ukrainian military personnel.
Since Russia’s invasion 18 days ago, more than 2.6 million refugees have fled Ukraine.
