One of the harbingers of spring in Saskatoon is Meewasin’s Pelican Watch contest, which continues through March 31st.
From April through October, pelicans gather by the Weir to feed.
Meewasin Valley Authority Resource Management Officer, Renny Grilz, says, “Not only do these large birds represent the beginning of spring in our area, but pelicans are also a conservation success story, being the first species to be ‘delisted’ from the threatened species list in 1987.
Everyone gets a free guess at when you think the first pelican will be seen at Weir by the Saskatoon Nature Society, through Meewasin’s website.
There are prizes available, including gear to help explore the outdoors.
