The Canadian Taxpayers Federation brought their national debt clock tour to Saskatoon Friday.
CTF Federal Director, Franco Terrazano says the federal debt is more than $1.1 trillion dollars and it keeps climbing by $391.5 million everyday and more than $4500 dollars every second.
Terazzano says they’re on a cross-country voyage to show Canadians how much the federal debt is.
“The debt clock has a huge display and it showing the government’s one trillion dollar debt, go up by about $4500 hundred dollars every single second. And that means each resident of Saskatoon is on the hook for more than $30,000 thousand dollars in federal government debt. Now I don’t know too many people who have that kind of money laying around just to pay for their politicians credit card bills.”
With the debt continuing to climb, the federal director says they had to get a new debt clock. “The Trudeau government broke the last one. It didn’t have enough displays to show the government’s full one-trillion dollars worth of debt so I guess we underestimated the ability of politicians to spend other peoples’ money.”
According to data from the Parliamentary Budget Officer, the federal government isn’t on track to balance the budget until the year 2070.
