A First Nation in north-central Saskatchewan is thanking a local RCMP detachment for its hard work to keep the community safe.
Elders and community members gathered in the school on the Witchekan Lake First Nation for an Honouring Ceremony. They recognized the seven officers of the Spiritwood detachment for their work in a March 6th drug bust. Four people were arrested and face a variety of drug and weapons charges.
“Sometimes I cry because of what I see in my community,” said Chief Annie Thomas about the alcohol and drug problems affecting some residents. She also indicated two of those charged in the recent drug bust were her son-in-law and his father.
“We are seeing the hurt in our communities and we are burying more loved ones because of alcohol and drugs rather than old age,” Chief Thomas said. However, she added that today was a positive one as they honoured the RCMP.
The ceremony was broadcast live on the Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations Facebook page and was also attended by Treaty Commissioner Mary Culbertson.
