As of March 31st, daily average COVID-19 case counts in Canada have increased by 28 per cent. That, from Chief Public Health Officer, Dr. Theresa Tam, who says they are monitoring international developments, since some countries which have passed the peak of the Omicron wave are experiencing resurgences, in particular the Omicron sub-lineage BA-2. Predominance of this variant of Omicron is common among countries reporting a resurgence of cases and less stringent public health measures.

Dr. Tam says Canada is experiencing a resurgence, but the country is still in a better position than we were two years ago. We have learned more about how the virus behaves and we are better equipped with new tools, including diagnostics, a portfolio of six Health Canada authorized vaccines and more treatment options. She cautions that even though case counts remain low, the pandemic is not over.
