“How can this not warm your heart?” Those words from Joanne Kosolofski who heads up the Pathway to Wellness Program in Kindersley. After seeing an example of a sensory path herself, and in the wake of adding a Special Needs Room to the West Central Events Centre, Kosolofski and parents of autistic children in the community, as well as her son who is an artist – in a true grassroots effort – transformed a standard hallway into a magical place for children. The idea is to stimulate special needs children while allowing them to burn off energy. She says she recently went upstairs and saw 8 children playing on the sensory path which features a hopscotch leading to things like jumping on lilly pads and then clouds and following a rainbow. Kosolofski says it is a different approach than most sensory paths because it is housed in the local rink versus the larger centres where you’d probably see it in a school.
