The Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations (FSIN) is calling on the Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital in Saskatoon to investigate how a seven-month-old baby boy broke his leg under the hospital’s care.
Tobias Soosay was born prematurely in September and has spent his entire life at the Saskatoon medical facility.
His mother, Teelah, says Tobias was fine when she left the hospital on April 4th to care for her other children on the Mosquito, Grizzly Bear’s Head, Lean Man First Nation, about half an hour south of North Battleford. She returned to the hospital on April 7th to find Tobias in a cast.
“When I walked in, his leg was covered up,” Soosay told reporters at a news conference in Saskatoon on Wednesday afternoon. “I uncovered him to pick him up to find out he had a whole leg cast on. It scared me,” she said.
Soosay asked a nurse what had happened to her son.
“They (nurses) noticed he was in pain because of his leg. They took him down for x-rays to find out that his (right) femur bone was broken. They told me it was a slight break. I asked how it happened and they said they didn’t know.”
Soosay says Tobias is doing well and is a happy baby. However, she wants a more detailed answer about what happened. The FSIN says it stands behind the Soosay family and has one its appointed health officials working alongside during the entire investigation.
