Fire crews from the Saskatoon Fire Department (SFD), Pike Lake, Delisle and Montrose Fire Departments remained on the scene putting out spot fires until 6:30 Tuesday evening after a controlled burn south of Saskatoon became an out of control grass fire.
Saskatoon fire crews were called out at 2:54 p.m. to a fire along the Pike Lake Highway south of Valley Road. On arrival, a large grass fire was being pushed by a strong, gusty east-southeast wind. The wind was made it difficult to get the fire under control. The smoke also significantly reduced visibility. By supper time Tuesday the fire had consumed a trailer and possibly some vehicles. The highway was closed for a short time as well, before being reopened around 6:30 p.m.
The Saskatoon Fire Department says fighting the blaze was a collaborative effort by all fire services with support from Corman Park Police and the RCMP. Engines, off-road vehicles, tankers, and necessary equipment were provided by all fire services with Montrose Fire Department supplying 3,000 liters of water during the incident.
